Raising Funds to Bring Irish Children to Columbia

Our major fundraising event is a Golf Tournament & Auction, but the fundraising efforts of the Program continue throughout the year. Several churches devote a portion of their outreach funds to this peacemaking effort, and various civic groups provide full or partial sponsorship for one or more of the Irish children. Contributions from businesses in the community have increased somewhat as the goals of the project and its non-political, non-sectarian nature have become better known. Donations from individuals constitute a large percentage of the monies raised.

Host families are invaluable in making appeals on behalf of the Program, in presenting requests to their church, civic group and business contacts, in assisting with mailings and with special fund-raising events and in "spreading the word" about the Irish Children's Program in general. Fund-raising is a challenging and difficult task and requires the assistance of all who believe in the goals and the spirit of the Program.

In reference to finances, it is important to note that the ICSP is an all-volunteer effort. There is no paid staff nor are there any office expenses. The Program does not employ professional fundraisers; contributors can be reassured that all donations are used to directly benefit the children. The majority of the budget is devoted to airfare, of which 25% must be paid when seats are booked in September, with installment payments made during the winter and a final payment due approximately eight weeks before the date of travel.

All fundraising endeavors, all sacrifices and extraordinary efforts of the host families, the Board members and the other dedicated volunteers are directed toward one goal: to give the children from Northern Ireland, who are growing up in a tradition of violence, tension, and hatred, a safe, happy summer and the chance to get to know each other in a friendly, peaceful setting.
